What this discount calculator does
It turns a marked-down price into the two numbers you actually care about: how much money you keep, and what you will hand over at the till. Shops advertise the percentage because a large percentage looks dramatic, but the saving in currency terms is what determines whether a deal is worth acting on. Entering the figures takes a couple of seconds and removes the guesswork from sale season, coupon codes and clearance shelves.
The formula behind it
The saving is price × discount ÷ 100, and the amount you pay is price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). A 35% reduction on 240 saves 84 and leaves 156 to pay. A useful shortcut for mental arithmetic: 10% is the price with the last digit removed, so 30% is that figure tripled.
How to use this calculator
Enter the original price and the discount percentage, then press Calculate. The result shows both the amount saved and the final price. To check a "second item half price" offer, work out the total for both items and divide by two to find the effective percentage.
Reading offers accurately
Successive discounts never add up: 20% off followed by a further 20% is 36% off in total, not 40%, because the second reduction applies to the already-reduced price. Watch for prices inflated shortly before a sale, and remember that tax is normally applied after the discount, so the saving on the tax follows automatically.
