Tip Calculator

Calculate tip and split the bill between people.

What this tip calculator does

It works out the gratuity on a bill and, when several people are eating together, divides the total into equal shares. Doing this in your head after a long meal is where arithmetic tends to fail, and the person who ends up short is usually whoever paid the card. Entering three numbers settles the bill fairly in a few seconds.

The formula behind it

The tip is bill × percentage ÷ 100, the total is the bill plus that tip, and each share is the total divided by the number of people. On a bill of 180 with an 18% tip shared between four, the tip is 32.40, the total is 212.40 and each person owes 53.10.

How to use this calculator

Enter the bill amount, the tip percentage you want to leave and how many people are sharing. The result shows the tip, the grand total and the amount per person. Set the number of people to 1 when you are dining alone and only need the total.

What to tip, and where

Customs vary sharply. In the United States and Canada 15–20% is standard in restaurants and is a substantial part of staff income. Much of Europe rounds up or leaves 5–10%, and service is often already included — look for "service compris" or a service line on the bill before adding more. In Japan, tipping is not customary and can cause confusion. When a service charge already appears, tip on the pre-charge subtotal if you want to add anything at all.
