What is long division?

Long division is the standard written method for dividing one whole number by another when the numbers are too big to divide in your head. It breaks the problem into a series of simple steps, working from the leftmost digits and bringing down one digit at a time. This calculator does the division and shows the full working so you can learn or check each step.

How the steps work

At each stage you look at the current working value, see how many times the divisor fits into it (that digit becomes part of the quotient), multiply back and subtract to get a remainder, then bring down the next digit of the dividend. Repeating this until no digits remain leaves you with the final quotient and remainder.

Why it is useful
